Post-16 Options
Whether you’re getting ready to open your GCSE results or simply starting to think about what’s next after Year 11 – this is where your future starts to take shape.
In Doncaster, there are so many exciting ways to keep learning, build your skills, and take your next step with confidence. Whatever your interests, ambitions, or goals – there’s a path for you.
In the UK, young people must stay in some form of education or training until at least their 18th birthday, but there are options depending on your goals, your preferred way to learn and where you are at with your studies!
Your options include:
- Continuing in full-time education or study – such as Sixth Form or at a further education college. Find out more about this option and more on the National Careers Service website.
- Work or volunteer whilst studying part-time – such as a part-time course or training with an approved training provider, alongside at least 20 hours of work or volunteering per week. Find out more about this option and more on the National Careers Service Website.
- Work-based training such as apprenticeships – you can find these through your local college or apprenticeship provider, or find information on the National Apprenticeship Service Website.
- Specialist education and training – for those who need extra support, you can find further information here: Local Offer - Further and Higher Education - City of Doncaster Council

Volunteering
Doncaster is buzzing with a new way for young people to get involved in their community.
Across Doncaster, organisations are looking for fresh faces, whether you want to help at a community meal, support local events, or befriend someone who needs a chat, there’s a role for everyone, through Doncaster Volunteer Bank.
The best part? You can fit volunteering around your life, whether you’ve got a spare hour or want to commit to something regular.
The Doncaster Volunteer Bank, powered by the Voluntero app, is at the heart of this movement, making it easy to find opportunities that match your interests, skills, and schedule. You can browse ‘missions’ that appeal to you, track your hours, and even add your experience to your CV. Plus, the app helps you get any necessary DBS checks sorted if you need them for certain roles.
Young volunteers can make a huge impact in Doncaster by supporting local charities and events.
Volunteering isn’t just about giving back, it’s a chance to pick up new skills, meet people from all walks of life, and boost your confidence. Whether you’re working towards your Duke of Edinburgh Award, looking for work experience, or just want to do something meaningful, there’s a place for you.
So, why wait? Sign up to the Doncaster Volunteer Bank today and start your volunteering journey.
You can share you experiences with us on The Grid and encourage others to volunteer too.
