Work-based training - What are my options in Doncaster?
If you’re keen to get into the world of work and earn while you learn, work-based training could be a great option, and exactly what you’re looking for if you like to ‘learn by doing’ in a more hands-on, practical way.
This route let’s you develop real skills in a real job while working towards qualifications that will help you progress in your career or to reach your goals. Instead of being in a classroom full-time, you will spend much of your time in the workplace gaining experience and confidence in your chosen field, with some study to work towards your qualifications.
There are a few work-based training options available after Year 11, such as Apprenticeship and supported Internships. Let’s find out more:
Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships can be studied from Level 2 up to degree-level. Usually after leaving Year 11, you will typically start on a Level 2 or Level 3 Apprenticeship, depending on the grades you achieved at GCSE level.
Apprenticeships are paid jobs combined with study where you:
- Work around 30 hours per week for an employer
- Study typically one day a week (usually with a local college or training provider)
- Work towards a recognised qualification from Level 2 up to Degree-level
- Will earn a wage and get holiday pay just like other employees – the current National Minimum Wage rate for an apprentice is £7.55 per hour
- Have to apply, take part in an interview and be offered the Apprenticeship by the employer – just like a job! It’s great practice for the future
Apprenticeships are available in a huge range of industries and sectors including:
- Construction and Engineering
- Health and Social Care
- Business, Finance and IT
- Hair and Beauty
- Hospitality and Catering
- Creative and Digital Media
- Childcare and Education
Where can I find an Apprenticeship?
There is a national Apprenticeship website Find an apprenticeship - GOV.UK which lists all of the apprenticeships available in the UK. You can search for local Apprenticeship opportunities in Doncaster and filter by your chosen industry, and then apply once you find one that fits your goals.
Some employers will also list their own Apprenticeship opportunities on their own websites, and if you’re keen to work with one specific employer to undertake an Apprenticeship with, you and your family/support network may also contact them directly to see if this is something they might consider.
City of Doncaster Council Apprenticeships
City of Doncaster Council is one of the largest employers in Doncaster and offers a wide range of apprenticeships across different industry areas. They also regularly run Apprenticeship Insight events and tours, the next one taking place just after GCSE results day on Friday 22nd August 2025.
You can find out more about City of Doncaster Council apprenticeships including current vacancies, and their next Insight Day on their dedicated webpage HERE
Higher-level / Degree-level Apprenticeships
Did you know you can study an apprenticeship from Level 2 all the way up to degree-level? If you're thinking about your future options, an apprenticeship is a great alternative way to gain higher level and degree level qualifications whilst working and training.
Supported Internships
