Full-time education or study – What are my options in Doncaster?

If you’re finishing Year 11 and want to stay in full-time education, there are lots of great options here in Doncaster.

Whether you’re aiming for A Levels, want to learn a trade, or are still figuring things out, you can find a route that suits your interests and goals. Your choice and options might depend on:

  • How you like to learn and what suits your strengths
  • Your future/career goals
  • Where you are already in your education including the grades you achieved at GCSE/Level 2 study

Here’s a breakdown of the different options in Doncaster:

  • Full-time study at a Sixth Form/Sixth Form College
  • Full-time study at a Further Education College
  • Full-time study at a Specialist/Supported Study provision
  • Full-time study with a Private Training Provider/College

Find out more about each option and the places you can study below!

Sixth Form or Sixth Form Colleges

If you enjoyed school and want to stay in a classroom-based setting, Sixth Form could be a good fit for you!

What you can study:

  • A-Levels – usually 3 subjects studied over 2 years. A great option if you’re thinking about University or Higher Level study in the future, or want to keep your career options open by studying a few different topics/course areas
  • Level 3 Vocational Courses – like BTECs, T-Levels or Cambridge Technicals which are more coursework-based. These usually focus more on practical skills in specific areas such as health and social care, business and media, for example. With some providers you can mix different qualifications and subjects, but for some qualifications, such as T-Levels, you just study one subject

Further Education (FE) Colleges

Colleges offer a wide range of full-time courses and are often larger, with more independence than school. If this is the type of setting you think would work for you, let’s have a look at the different options.

What you can study:

  • Level 2/Level 3 Vocational Courses – such as BTECs, T-Levels or NVQs in areas such as engineering, construction, childcare, beauty etc
  • T-Levels – A newer style of qualification that combines classroom learning with industry placements (like an Apprenticeship but with more time in college)
  • Foundation Learning or Entry-Level Course – Ideal if you need extra support or didn’t get the grades you had hoped for. These can be a great stepping stone to accessing other education options in the future

Provider information Harrison College is a Section 41 approved SPI, specialist post 16 provision for young people aged 16 -25 with ASD and/or SEMH needs. Our cohort is generally made up of young people that have accessed mainstream secondary provision, but their success was dependent upon small teaching groups, 1-1 support, access to safe spaces and break out rooms.

We have created an inclusive, business and enterprise provision where learners can thrive, placing no limits on what can be achieved no matter their background or starting point, leading to a secure and prosperous future. We pride ourselves on delivering quality first teaching, high staff ratios of 1:4 and bespoke curriculum for each learner. The College is based on a business park in Doncaster with ease of access for transport routes but also the location lends itself to the nature of our provision due to the focus on business and enterprise. The learners are surrounded by local and national business and this then prompts discussion and also the mindset of getting ‘work ready’.

Our study programme is 5 day provision for 2 years and is based around a level 2 (GCSE equivalent) provision with some courses running from level 1 through to level 3 and individual learners accessing learning up to and including level 5. We have developed our study programme to be centered around skills development, based on the national Skills Builder framework including Communication, Leadership, Teamwork, Problem Solving, Creativity and Self Management. In addition to this we run Project Based Learning, this is based on live projects led by employers within our wide network
