Community Celebrates Bentley Park Cycling Launch with Olympic Champion Ed Clancy

Local residents and community partners came together on Friday 31 October, to celebrate the launch of the new cycling provision in Bentley Park.

Marking a major milestone in Bentley’s journey towards supporting people to have an active lifestyle and make long lasting healthy changes, the park will now serve as a hub for free cycling training with a range of bikes and adapted cycles available.

The new facilities, which will be based from containers in the park, will allow residents of all ages and abilities to take part in sessions which are tailored to their own goals.

The event was made extra special with the attendance of Olympic cycling champion and Active Lives Commissioner for South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) Ed Clancy OBE, who officially cut the ribbon to launch the new container alongside Councillor James Church and a local resident. Ed also took part in the led walk and ride on the day, symbolising the partnership between national sporting excellence and community spirit.

Those in attendance enjoyed a day of guided rides, walking activities and family-friendly fun, all designed to inspire residents to get active and discover the benefits of cycling and walking in everyday life.

Councillor James Church, cabinet member and portfolio holder for Neighbourhoods, Planning and Public Health at City of Doncaster Council, said:

“The new facilities provided by the Ride, Stride and Thrive pilot is a great asset to Bentley Park and residents. It will help to embed cycling as a fun, accessible and healthy way to get around, whilst building confidence, boosting wellbeing and connecting with the local community. My thanks go to everyone involved, particularly Marianne Turner and Kerry Perruzza for bringing this exciting initiative to life.”

South Yorkshire's Active Lives Commissioner, Ed Clancy OBE, said: “It’s been fantastic to see so many people come together to celebrate what this space now offers. You don’t need special gear or experience to enjoy cycling- just the right bike, a bit of encouragement, and a safe place to give it a go. This project is about making cycling feel possible for more people, whatever their age or ability. We're happy to support Doncaster Council in helping residents move more, feel confident, and enjoy being active in their community.”

The event’s success marks the start of a new chapter for Bentley, one where walking, wheeling and cycling are at the heart of the community life.
