Environmental Day of Action - Edlington
As part of the regenerative work, Team Edlington joined forces with the dedicated Friends of Martinwells Lake Group for a hugely successful Environmental Day of Action Day at Martinwells lake and what a day it was despite the weather.
Volunteers from across the community, including members of the Extra Time group on Lake Close, Helping Hands, Edlington Pittwood Group came together to support the ongoing regeneration of this cherished green space.
Thanks to the incredible teamwork and community spirit, a wide range of tasks were completed, including:
- Tree trimming and stairway tidying to improve access and safety
- Dead wood clearance in multiple areas to enhance the natural habitat
- Litter picking to keep the lake surroundings clean and inviting
- Plinth access restoration and tree line cutting to open up key pathways
- Ditch clearance improving drainage and access through the tree line
The transformation was remarkable, and the energy on the day was infectious. Martinwells Lake has long been a symbol of community resilience, having been turned from a fly-tipping hotspot into a vibrant, welcoming space through years of hard work by local volunteers.
Church View Community Centre kindly opened its doors to provide a warm and welcoming venue for lunch and all participated in great conversation and a quiz!
This event was also a brilliant showcase of CDC’s Corporate Volunteering Scheme, with staff stepping up to give back to the community and the teams that supported were Neighbourhoods & Welbeing Team, Streetscene’s grounds team, Well Doncaster and the Countryside Rangers. It was a true celebration of what can be achieved when people come together with a shared purpose, SYP even gave up some hours to assist.
Regenerative Neighbourhood Manager, Donna Flicker, is working closely with the Friends Of group to further develop the site. Discussions have taken place around the group rejoining the Greenspace Network and applying for funding to support improvements such as:
- Resurfacing of footpaths
- Installation of a new information board
- Tree maintenance
- Other site enhancements
The Countryside Team has also committed to providing increased support and is currently exploring a range of initiatives to assist the group moving forward.
