Day of Action - Mexborough

A coordinated Day of Action was held in Mexborough, led by the Neighbourhood Team in collaboration with South Yorkshire Police, the Enforcement Team, WISE, Your Place/Your Family, and Zone 5-19. The initiative delivered a range of positive outcomes, enhancing public safety, improving environmental standards and strengthening community engagement.

Environmental Enforcement:

  • 1 misused or abandoned bin was removed.
  • 9 misused bins were removed; residents will be contacted to provide education and re-establish proper collections.
  • 13 residents were engaged face-to-face during the visit.
  • 11 bin lid repairs were completed.
  • 9 fly tip inspections were conducted in areas spotted where fly tipping is an issue
  • WISE Issued an FPN for littering on Hartley Street and Engaged with 4 people for means to pick up so no further FPNs were issued.

Community Engagement:

  • Twenty-five residents were engaged in discussions around local concerns, including antisocial behaviour and nuisance motorbikes. These conversations are helping to shape future priorities and strengthen trust between the community and local services.
  • Residents were provided with well-being flyers, home security advice, and key contact information to support easier access to relevant services.

Crime and Enforcement - South Yorkshire Police:

  • Responded to reports of anti-social behaviour involving two children in a shop on High Street. Their parent facilitated an apology to the shopkeeper, resulting in a positive resolution.
  • Engaged with a known street drinker and instructed disposal of alcohol to discourage public drinking.
  • Recovered a weapon from a residential garden.
  • Conducted vehicle checks to ensure none were stolen.
  • Monitored Schofield Street; minimal activity observed with no evidence of drug use or dealing.

Business Engagement Summary:

All local businesses on High Street, Main Street, and Bank Street were approached and invited to join the WhatsApp group established by the South Yorkshire Police Neighbourhood Policing Team. This group facilitates real time information sharing regarding suspected shoplifters, including descriptions and updates. Businesses on Main Street expressed concerns about previously feeling overlooked due to their location outside High Street. They welcomed the engagement and appreciated the support and guidance provided by Neighbourhood Officers.

Community Information Survey:

The Community Information Survey was conducted to gather residents' perceptions of safety and anti-social around the Town Centre. 209 properties were visited and key Themes around the Community Information Surveys were:

  • Fear of retaliation prevents residents from reporting
  • Youth behaviour as a source of intimidation
  • Drug activity and vehicle misuse/ ORB - feeling that authorities are either absent or ineffective.
