Community Action Day Targets Off-Road Bike Nuisance at Community Open Space in Mexborough
In response to a surge of community complaints, Neighbourhoods, local police and partners focused their latest Action Day on a park known locally as the Rocket Park in Mexborough, zeroing in on the persistent issue of illegal off-road biking.
Thanks to the efforts of a dedicated sergeant, the team was joined by the specialist Off-Road Bike (ORB) unit for several hours of targeted patrols. Their presence made an immediate impact.
Whilst patrolling the area, the ORB team discovered a property suspected of storing illegal off-road bikes. They also pursued a rider behaving erratically and intercepted a man preparing to ride his quad bike to a local chemist.
During engagement and visibility patrols, officers encountered a group of teenagers in a garden with an off-road bike bearing fake plates. Officers were able to record the bike’s details and the associated address for further investigation by South Yorkshire Police.
Users of the Rocket Park expressed appreciation for the visible presence. While many acknowledged the challenge of tackling off-road bike crime, they were encouraged to see action being taken. Several said the operation restored their confidence in reporting issues, knowing that their concerns are being heard and acted upon.
The sight of the ORB team riding through the community was met with enthusiasm, with one resident describing it as “a real morale boost."
